Introduction to Leadership Theory

According to Bass and Riggio (2006), leadership is seen as a new way of leading organisations and their management in the twentieth century. A leader is an individual who is in control of others. His leadership qualities, which influence and inspire employees also have overall impact on the growth and performance of the organisation. A leader is also someone who keeps an eye on the managers; in reality, leaders have a number of responsibilities. Similarly, Northouse (2014) defines leadership as a method of motivating and influencing groups of people, as well as a method of approaching their talents, characteristics, and goals in order to develop relationships and businesses (Akinyoade and Uche, 2016).
Management on the other hand, refers to the process of consistently setting organizational objectives and goals, shaping the work structure and organizational context, and attempting to establish an atmosphere in which individuals who work together successfully achieve the organization’s objectives and goals (Prasad, 2020, p.3). Koontz and Weihrich (1990) characterized management as the process of creating and sustaining a workplace in which individuals who collaborate efficiently and effectively achieve specific objectives. As managers and stakeholders, the concept of management needed to be expanded. In addition, management applies to managers at all levels of an enterprise. More so, all managers strive for a creatin surplus. Last but not least, management is concerned with production and efficiency, all of which must be productive. Furthermore, management comprises of managerial competence and quality in the workplace, problem solving, governance, human resource management, and other important areas of leadership in an organization.
